Even Spongebob Squarepants knows of greed. In the television show, Mr. Krabs’ avarice is clear throughout the series. He is always thinking of ways to turn a profit, even if it involves taking advantage of his friends. If one finds that he or she has been greedy then rationalization becomes a handy way to deal with it.
Rationalization, a fancy word for making excuses, is a defense mechanism in which perceived controversial behaviors or feelings are logically justified and explained in a rational or logical manner in order to avoid any true explanation. By rationalizing one can explain to oneself or others behavior for which one's real motives are different. This then makes the actions tolerable to the greedy person. Some greedy people have become quite adept at rationalizing many of their actions.
Choices are an important part of life. You make the choices that lead you down life’s path. Towards the end of life, your life is defined by the choices that you have made throughout your life. For example, if you choose not to work most of your life, then your retirement income might not be what you desire. That sometimes forces one to seek other means of income.
In Christianity greed is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. I often ask myself “what makes a good Christian?” If you go to church and get involved and smile at everyone and take on a lot of responsibility have you become a “good Christian?” Or do we define a good Christian based on daily deeds and actions throughout life? Some among us profess to be Christians but when they walk out the door of the church they throw off that cloak of Christianity and become who they really are. Does anyone really know what lurks inside when you have a smile on your face and a kind disposition?
Change is a constant in life. “Times change, circumstances change, people change,” or so I have been told. But do people really change? Is losing part of your family really worth it just for material gain?
