Fun day Sunday

Sunday was a lovely fall day and I took advantage. I began with a visit to the documentary film festival parking lot to check on the car decorated yesterday to coincide with a documentary about decorated cars that was showing.

Now this is some hood ornament!! The car will be auctioned but I think I will probably pass on that.

I strolled the busy streets among the visitors picking up a couple of caches along the way. It is always a fun place to people watch. I wore my crazy Cape Cod T shirt so I might have been the one being watched?!

A drive out to Crystal Springs was rewarding as I had a cup of tea and a nice visit with Chris while I admired her decorating/remodeling projects. Her house belongs in decorator's magazine. It is magnificent.  We went down to daughter Joy's house and had a pleasant visit with her. She has also been in remodel mode and has really made some great changes to the century old house. I offered a claw-foot tub for her guest bath!

Back in town I stopped by Kay's. She was busy preparing for another week of teaching but her painted black back door looked fine!

Leon enjoyed an afternoon of football and rest! He is starting to feel much better after his bout with shingles! Now we can focus on flu shots.We will go to a drive by tomorrow and get a shot at the mall. Don't even have to get out of the car!

Rubik's Cube Car

Thursday was a chilly day with a brisk breeze but no rain. What better to do than pick up a few geocaches around town. I found nine but there were plenty that I did not find. I did find a strange car in front of the documentary film festival. It must tie in with a movie they are showing.

Fall happenings

The weather has been on the cool side and the leaves are starting to have some color, but very little compared to what we saw on the New England Whirlwind Tour! I have spent way too much time walking in the leaves catching up on some geocaches around town. But being retired, I don't know what else I should be doing. One cache led me on a walk at the Entergy Park on Lake Hamilton. After the next cache I took advantage of my membership and walked through a portion of Garvan Gardens.

Yesterday was rainy and the perfect day to go to the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, where I met Chris, Mel, Darla and her sisters.  The Legend of Pancho Barnes was an excellent choice and most entertaining.

Looking forward to the Razorback game on Saturday. Yes, the SEC officiating team from last week's Florida/Arkansas game have been suspended temporarily! If only the players could have determined the outcome of that game! Go HOGS!

Jiggety Jog

It is nice to be home again. Leon's shingles seem to be improving. And we get to watch the Razorback's play football this afternoon ... but Florida, the number one team!? At least we won't have to go to a sports bar!

Sing, Willy, Sing

A call from my friend Kay had us out geocaching at 7 am. Someone had posted a new cache last night and she did not find it in the dark this morning or last night. Explaining to the policeman what she was doing last night makes for a funny story. When we got there the sun was up and after a few minutes of looking I found it and got to log a FTF (First to Find). Another cacher showed up and started looking while we were there. Was nice to visit with her but I'm glad I found it first. Gingerose has hidden many caches around town.

Then we went to Little Rock to pick up Hernando. His generator is purring like a kitten again! My punishment for not running it more often was a hefty bill. Now I can hear Willy singing. Thursday we will hit the dusty trail and you will find us wandering along in the right lane..the slow lane. We had planned to leave last week, but not with a malfunctioning generator! How would I dry my hair when camping in the Walmart parking lot!!! Kentucky, here we come!

I picked up a couple of geocaches on their second try this afternoon on the way home while Leon checked out the casino at Oaklawn Park. He was impressed but did not spend any money. We had a nice visit from David after we arrived back at the dead end. Then after dinner we drove out to Crystal Springs to Lewis Liquor so I could return Chris' magazine. Joy was there..perched in her pretend office on a stack of Busch beer cartons. A friend from Little Rock had been up earlier. Her office was on the boxes of Kahlua. It just isn't every local liquor store that offers wifi! But this isn't just any liquor store either!

Geocaching treasure

Geocaching can lead you to neat places which has become less and less the case as folks are just putting them anywhere and everywhere. But recently we discovered this small fantasyland of metal sculptures less than two miles from home. The recently opened child advocacy center for abused children has created a small wonderland behind the building complete with plenty of water features. For some reason the fishing pond is empty but that did not stop the elephant from squirting water out of his trunk. Catherine Anthony was the benefactor for this center in honor of her mother, Mrs. Cooper, where I just happened to go to kindergarten in the mid 1940s! Many people my age have fond memories of her large house on Prospect. I can taste tomato juice and graham crackers as I type!

Labor Day weekend

We like to take a longer than usual walk on Sunday mornings. Not that we take that many walks! Yesterday we decided to use our season passes for a change and visit Garvan Woodland Gardens. They have a new area designed for children which includes waterfalls and caves constructed from large boulders and varying passageways. The bridge from dried twigs caught my attention! Leon and I were instantly young at heart and we enjoyed exploring the area. We then walked part of the nature trail, another new area to Leon.



My friend Becky, who has recently moved to Fayetteville from Kansas City, came to town yesterday with her daughter Paula. We spent the afternoon and evening getting caught up. We dropped in on Kay who was painting cabinets and she and Paula shared some laughs. We ended the day with a late dinner at Central Park Fusion.

We are patiently waiting to sing with Willy!! We hope to get on the road again next week. We waited too long to get the generator running and Hernando is now in Little Rock getting his carburetor cleaned. So we are almost a week behind schedule and we haven't left town yet!

Geocaching success

Saturday we enjoyed lunch at one of our favorite local spots on Lake Hamilton in order to look for the geocache hidden there. The gps went crazy and we had no luck as we did not want to overdo it with a restaurant full of muggles (people watching us).


Leon went to a Saturday matinee and I couldn't resist a return to look for the cache since the restaurant is closed in the afternoon. I don't understand why people choose such a spot with a hillside of rocks used for fill to hide a cache and the key is to look under the proper rock. But look I did and there it was just as the Belle that is housed there sailed off for the sunset cruise.

Walking again

It is hard to believe it has been a month since our last gallery walk. Kay and Darla joined us for a gallery stroll down Central Avenue while the Blues Festival was gearing up in Hill Wheatley Park across the street. I had a nice visit with a high school classmate. Kay Morgan has not changed that much and was displaying her water colors at the Blue Moon Gallery. Her focus was on life in the 50's in Hot Springs which coincides with our 50 year high school reunion next month! Yes, I am that old!!! She also had a nice depiction of Lance's, the little shop across from our high school where we all headed at lunchtime. Ah, the cream puffs.

The lady in the convertible is Betty Morgan, Kay's mother. I had not realized that Kay's grandfather was Spencer of Spencer's Corner, where he had a tobacco shop.


We had a delightful dinner in a new restaurant on Malvern Avenue. Via Roma has a great menu featuring Sicilian food. The atmosphere was most pleasant and the dining area was elegant with a homey feel to it. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. One of my former students has just opened the restaurant. When I taught him they had just recently arrived from Romania.

Busy day

I took my sister to the airport in Little Rock bright and early for her trip to North Carolina. Well, actually it was 8 am before we left. Her friend Ed caught a ride for his one hour later flight to Florida. Leon drove over earlier with the van and dropped it off at a generator fixit shop! We have delayed our trip in order to get the generator going. Why did we put it off to the last minute? It is just something that I do.
The day was delightful weatherwise so when we got home we went geocaching. Somehow that led us to the Chinese buffet and we then had to come home for naps. Later in the day we were geocaching again at Leon's request! We stopped by Kay's for a short visit. One of her lights had slipped down and Leon gratiously tightened the screw. She has the most awesome new rugs.

Boat float

Each day is just delightful as summer winds down. The temperatures are in the 80s and today Chris and I enjoyed a float with Kay on her boat. We rode down Lake Hamilton to an easy geocache on what they called Goose Island. However if you had no boat there would be nothing easy about it! Then as we meandered up the Mazarn we noticed a fellow trying to paddle his seadoo. We offered to tow him home and he was most grateful. He did not live that close! We also offered him some veggies and wine but he declined so we got even and declined the money he offered.

After a fine ride we went over to daughter Kay's house for a short visit. Then as I headed home I was diverted by the fact that there were nearby geocaches and what better time to go then on a peaceful Sunday evening. Had I known I was going friend Kay and I could have gone together. She was there shortly after I.

When I got home Leon had finished the clothes, put up the dishes, bought some groceries, and eaten supper. And to think he could have been on a boat ride. What a guy!

Moving day for Kay

The new dog in Kay's life is her housewarming gift from the girls' group, also known as the Maids.

I arrived at Kay's at 7:00 am and we filled the van one last time in an hour. The real movers then showed up while I went to the new house and unloaded. I was delighted when Darla came over to help. By 12:30 all of Kay's possessions were unloaded!

Leon went to Little Rock to a gun show. He later wondered why but lunch at Pei Wei made it all worthwhile. He came to Kay's when he got back and changed the connection on her dryer, hooked up the washer, and added a ground fault receptacle for the jacuzzi that never has been used. Kay was delighted.

Darla is the door knob whiz so she and I installed the new brushed aluminum door handles. I started with dummy knobs and worked my way up! Mel joined us and brought her new great cranberry salsa recipe and fritos! Mary stopped by at 4 and we stopped for a pizza party! It was a busy day but with friends pitching in it was also an enjoyable one!

Moving weekend

Friday evening was a busy time helping Kay move to her new home. Leon and Jeff took a heavy trailer load but lost the iron patio table at one point. A nice policeman pulled Leon over and let him know. By the time he got to the table two guys were loading it into their truck, but Leon was there in the nick of time.

Speaking of Nick, he was a little confused by all the moving and I am sure he wondered why he was sitting under the flowers but there wasn't much room left. Tomorrow the movers will get the big stuff and we will finish the day with pizza at the new place.

Mary brought her garden cart and was a big help also.

Fall flight

The hummingbirds are busy getting ready for their flight south. It seems all they need to do is eat a lot. We have been trying to get ready for a flight north to enjoy the fall foliage in New England. True, we eat plenty but we have also been working on Hernando to get him ready. Yes, we are going in the van; otherwise, I would need to sell it! He has had a bubble bath, now if only the generator would run and the hot water heater would light. So much for neglecting him for so long. But most importantly, the refrigerator is working!

No shiny brass

The better part of the weekend was spent helping Kay get her home ready for it's new resident. All outlet covers and vent covers are back in place, the towel racks are up, as are most of the light fixtures. Leon got the new ceiling fan hung yesterday while I worked through the list that included replacing the house numbers. No more shiny brass in that house! I haven't even worked my way up to shiny brass at my place. Today the flooring people will arrive. How exciting! There is such a chill in the morning air that we will wait a little while before going for a walk.

Just a Wednesday

Yesterday was a busy one for sure. We went to the ex father-in-law's funeral and it was nice to run into so many people that I have not seen in a long time. Leon has no idea who was who he met so many people.
Afterwards I stopped at Weldon's meat market for some beautiful bacon wrapped filets and got giant baking potatoes to save a trip to Walmart.
Then a visit with the hygienist took an hour before a trip to get my haircut. Funny how these roots aren't dark anymore! Not a good sign for me! No, I will not gracefully go gray.
Jeff, Kay, David, Mary, and Ed joined us for a cookout. Just as the steaks were ready we heard a loud clap of thunder as if it were a dinner bell, but we got only a few drops of rain. It was a most enjoyable visit. We should do it more often and would if it were cooler.
Today it is cloudy as if we might get some rain. Leon has gone to get new tires to replace his new tires! He bought some at Walmart two weeks ago only to find out that they are out of round. Walmart has offered to replace them but all that they have in stock are also bad. So he has decided to go to Sears and get a different brand. Beware of Uniroyal tires! The Walmart guys surely knew they were bad when they put them on, but it turned out to be a blessing. When he went to an automotive shop to have the alignment checked they found a loose tie rod.

Kay's daze

Saturday was designated a "work day" to help Kay get her house ready for the painters. We began by meeting at Burgers 'n More for nourishment and an opportunity to celebrate Darla's upcoming birthday. Then we descended upon Kay's new home where the for sale sign was falling out of the way.We waisted no time in getting to work. Darla, Chris and Kay began in the kitchen. It is nice to have someone who can stand upright on kitchen cabinets!

Cissy was caught taking some solid brass knobs off the bathroom cabinets! Kay is not a fan of shiny brass and has chosen some new knobs to replace them.

Mary was a whiz at patching nail holes. She also managed to maneuver the sheetrock nails out of the wall to be replaced and patched!

Darla's expertise in all things regarding paint is most appreciated. She took care of the blemishes on the kitchen cabinets.

This was only the beginning of many times that we will gather around the kitchen counter. And hopefully the toolboxes will be replaced with low fat snacks!

Now where is that Leon? Oh, he was outside putting up new light fixtures and missed the photo shoot.

On Sunday Kay removed the kitchen cabinets as she had located and ordered new hinges online! She was pleased to finally have everything ready for the painters and felt so blessed to have friends and family to help.

Not a sandbox!

When the border was down and the city pit inside I must admit Jeff was right. It did look like a sandbox. But now that the pavers are in place it works for a tiny patio. Now I will not have tall grass tickling my ankles when I sit in the shade, nor will I have to move chair to weedeat. I am pleased with the project.

Paul Michael

With everyone on a decorating high, whether it be remodel, new house, or spiff up the yard, it was time for a trip to Paul Michael's. We do procrastinate for a bit because it is a 3 1/2 hour trip each way, but Monday was the day. We took the truck just in case and probably should have pulled the trailer also. We left at 7 am and before lunch we had toured the building getting ideas. The buffet across the street was another chance for superfluous activity. We did start with salad and left off the dessert for the most part, but the fried catfish, chicken, meatloaf, and turnip greens were irrestible.
After fortifying ourselves Cissy, Chris, Kay, Darla and I went back to fill our carts. That was the easy part. We finally managed to get everything in the truck and thank goodness we had a tarp to cover our treasures and keep Cissy's ceiling panel from blowing away. We only had to stop once to readjust the straps and by a small miracle nothing was broken other than those items already broken in the scratch and dent room. There are some really good prices in that room! Kay's lantern with the broken glass will make a fine bird feeder. She did win the prize for the most purchases but she is the one with the new house.

Patio project

I went outside yesterday to mow but the grass was too wet! I did not want to waste a pleasant morning outdoors and decided to build a patio instead. Everyone should have a trailer load of city pit sitting around for just such uses. I dumped a few loads and when Leon got back from getting the truck washed we were off to Lowe's to get it dirty again with a load of red bricks. Something has to hold the dirt in place on the slope! Now to let it settle.

Leon went to gallery walk with a back ache last night while I went to Cissy's birthday dinner. We actually planned to meet for gallery walk but he apparently got his Mexican dinner much faster than I got my seafood. It was indeed a fun filled day although a little hot.

Just another different day!

I never thought I would be attending a memorial service at a mental health treatment center and what a pleasant experience it was. We traveled to Little Rock for just such an occasion. There was a room full of delightful people from all walks of life, many of them clients of the program. Two of the clients conducted the service and made a beautiful tribute, including a touching poem written by one of the ladies in the program. It was interesting to hear her include "taking her meds" in the poem. That was a common theme for most of the friends that were there.
My cousin Bonny had spent most of her adult life in a rehabilitation center after the onset and diagnosis of schizophrenia. She had survived brain surgery and breast cancer before being sabotaged by lung cancer. She was a beautiful young girl with cornsilk hair who had a happy childhood. She had a dry wit and good sense of humor. Her hope chest, filled to the brim, was an obvious clue to her dreams for adulthood. But her dreams changed as anyone's can due to just one small gene. It could have happened to any one of us.
We had a nice visit with her brother Andrew over lunch at Pei Wei. He can be such a funny guy! We will miss him coming through town to go visit his sister. Hopefully, he will continue to visit.

To end the day we celebrated the arrival of Sam's in Hot Springs. An early soft opening for those who already purchased cards brought an outpouring of bargain hunters and curious folks to the old fairgrounds! We actually went for supper and were fed pizza, eggrolls, pie, ice cream, coffee, cake, and more. It is funny how people see a line and get in it. All they wanted people to do was walk in the front door! So we skipped that line; we asked and they said, "Just come on in!" We will go back at a less crowded time for a giant container of blueberries! We left Kay in line getting her card.

Trellises and more trellises and more

What a fun day! Darla, Chris and I made a 30 minute roadtrip south to check out the sales at Atwood's in Arkadelphia, a first visit for all of us. They had marked down the patio furniture 50% and I do love a good sale. I am always looking for tacky stuff to make my woods look unnatural and to incorporate them into my yard. I got this cedar one and will now try to choose the perfect location, although it will be easy to move when I change my mind. I thought about some wisteria but why cover up a pretty trellis? We loaded Chris' Suburban as well as we could with chairs, shepherds' hooks, trellis and trinkets and headed north.


After we stopped at Cracker Barrel for some nourishment we visited a little roadside flower stand. Darla got a beautiful pale pink angel wing begonia for her shade garden and I got the piece that broke off to try to root. The pleasant surprise was to find baskets of Arkansas peaches inside the store! They are most delicious. It was just an excellent day.

The next morning Chris called to let us know that Lowe's had their patio chairs on sale. I bought a few more and took a photo of my next trellis project. I think I can build this one. If only it weren't in the upper 90's outside each day now!

Open houses

Daughter Kay has found her new home! She selected a cozy patio home but oh what a little patio. That can be corrected. It is in a good location close to her workplace. She, Darla, Chris and I decided to visit a few upper-end open houses for ideas yesterday. It was a great success! Darla has ideas for her kitchen table, Chris has decided how to decorate her remodeled home, and I will perhaps someday have an idea. I can't wait to see all of this unfold.

Today Chris, Darla and I will go on a 30 mile roadtrip to check out Atwood's in Arkadelphia. We are always in seach of a bargain!

After days of no a/c and delightful weather the warmer summer temps are expected to return. The mid 90s and mid 70s with little rain will seem more like summer. And the grass will probably get dry enough to mow again.

Face to face

Leon was surprised when he was skyped by his daughter recently. She was keeping her grandson, Leon's great-grandson, in California. What a way to meet.




Robert was winding down his week long visit in Hot Springs yesterday and we had another nice visit. We fed him well at La Hacienda before he went across the lake to hang out with his younger friends. Then Leon and I wandered out to 2 Boys and a Dog to try their ice cream. The line was long and we watched as they combined everything imaginable on the marble slab .. pecan pie and ice cream? peanut butter cups and cherries and ice cream? We kept it simple..a black lab for Leon..other places that would be a hot fudge Sunday.

Oh thunder!

I am planning my day while watching the sun light the cloudy, hazy sky as the thunder rolls across just above the pines. I must make my annual trek to the POA meeting at the condos. The meetings always last too long and I must resist donuts. Often there is entertainment from loony condo owners. I will walk out at 12:15 if they are not done to go on an adventure.

Darla, Chris, and I are going to venture 30 miles down to Arkadelphia in search of on sale patio items. We have never been to Atwood's and first thought it was in Malvern. Now that we have the right city I think we can find it. Darla is "fixing up" her back yard and I, of course, will take her trash to put in my woods. I hope those Adirondack chairs aren't too heavy and too worn out! Maybe we will find some bargains.

Then I will fix supper (or pick a destination) for supper so we can have one more visit with Robert before he heads back to NC. That is more than I usually do in one day so I am looking foreward to it!

Leon has been busy rewiring his trailer attachment that fits on the back of the 5th wheel. It is good that he got it done yesterday. I think the rain might keep him inside today. He has been looking for 1 1/2 years for his socket set. Two weeks ago he broke down and bought new ones. Yesterday, while trying to rearrange the utility room, I opened a black box and there the old set sat. He had forgot he put them in that box. He thought it was some of my junk.

Crystal Springs tour

Friday noon found Darla, Kay and me venturing out to Crystal Springs to check out Chris' remodel. It looks fabulous! And to think only a few weeks ago we were scraping popcorn off her ceilings. Her new red sofa had just arrived and was the only piece of furniture on her beautiful, just refinished oak floors. The crown moulding really pulled everything together to top off her newly painted walls. There will be no lack of light in that house with so many new spots and light fixtures. Soon her new and beautiful antique furniture will blend together and sit side by side in splendor. That home, sitting quietly above the gentle flowing creek in the middle of the woods, belongs in a magazine.

We then went down to the marina at Crystal Springs recreation area and enjoyed lunch while looking out over the bay on Lake Ouachita. We even toured some of the back roads, still dirt, that many don't realize exist. Homes are built all along the crest of the mountains and the older section is filled with trailers and houses as you wind along the mountainside. Crystal Springs is a very old rural community, just a dot in the middle of the highway, surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. Many of the early settlers came for the mining in the area. When Lake Ouachita was created in the 1950s many newcomers built cottages or brought in house trailers for weekend retreats to the lake. It is a real eclectic mix of folks. It belongs in a magazine too! I am just not sure what kind. But I sure love to go out there.

Summertime

Summertime, and the living is easy! But it is the strangest summer weatherwise I can ever remember ... temps in Arkansas in the 80's in July, and we have had lots of rain. I have never seen such green grass in the summer months. If only I had not planted my dogwoods in the woods where they get direct afternoon sun.

Days are spent puttering which is my favorite retirement hobby, but I do put off necessary chores! Don't ask what. I don't want to think about them! I am now a youtube user! So I sit around each morning and create movies. I am soonbgone2 on You Tube.

Robert is in town this week and yesterday we had a great visit. We met Kay to look at a garden home in the afternoon and had a nice visit while waiting an hour for the realtor to arrive. How nice to take your own realtor, even if ex, along. When we finished it was time for supper and Pompeii was a good choice. We shared chocolate cake after spaghetti, lasagna and wine, and declared it Robert's birthday dinner. Jeff and Wookie came down and visited after we got back home. Kay, sorry you had to go grade papers!

Now to go to the historical society and get the new book on the end of the gambling era in Hot Springs which was written by the head of the state police at the time. Leon is going out for biscuits and gravy. No thank you.

Farmer's Market

This little girl provided us some entertainment at the Farmer's Market on Saturday. How wonderful it must be if your dad owns the watermelon trailer.

Oklahoma City

We took a couple of days from our not so busy schedule to visit "where the buffalo roam." And they indeed seem to roam all over town painted with fine designs. This one was at Bass Pro.


The focus of this trip was Josh, Leon's oldest grandson. We were also delighted to meet Melissa.

Leon's daughter and other grandsons came from California. Blade, Trisha, Josh, Melissa, Leon and Gunnar pose at Abuelo's, a Mexican restaurant where we had dinner in Bricktown. Bricktown is an old towntown section of OKC that has been refurbished from the once busy business/factory district that it was.

We also visited the Oklahoma City memorial. When I was first there years ago there was just a bombed out building with a chainlink fence acting as a memorial created by the throngs of people who visited the site. Sections of fence are also a part of the city's memorial.

168 chairs fill the area where the Murrah Federal Building once stood to honor the lives of those who died when the building was bombed on April 19, 1995. Names are engraved on each chair and they are in nine rows, placed according to which of the nine floors the victims were on.

The reflecting pool lies alongside as a reminder to all who visit on what was once N W Fifth Street.

On our return home we stopped in Shawnee. And .1 mile from our restaurant there just happened to be a geocache. We stopped and signed the log. Horses are the animal of choice for painting in this town and this one was the location of this cache.

Harvest

A farmer I am not. I have no luck with a garden. I build it, then I dismantle it. This year I have planted a few squashes. I almost missed this zucchini. At last, I have a summer harvest!

Frozen Strawberry Layer Cake

Hot summer days call for something cool and refreshing, yet light and easy to make! Normally that would be watermelon but when I want to make it look like I cook I like this recipe. It is my new favorite summer dessert!

Frozen Strawberry Layer Cake
3 weight watcher points; serves 12

Ingredients
6 cups sliced strawberries
1/2 cup sugar ( I use Splenda)
2 T fresh lemon juice
1/2 t salt
12 oz. Angel Food cake cut into 1/4” slices (Warning: Walmart's is only 9 oz)
4 cups fat free vanilla frozen yogurt

Instructions
Simmer strawberries, sugar, lemon juice and salt for 15 minutes. Mash about half the berries. Cool to room temperature.

Thaw the yogurt so it is spreadable.

Line the bottom of a 9 inch springform pan with 1/3 of cake slices cutting to fit the shape of the pan. Top with 1/2 frozen yogurt and spread to sides. Spread 2/3 cup strawberry sauce over the yogurt. Top with 1/2 of remaining cake slices, the remainder of the yogurt and 2/3 cup strawberry sauce. Finally seal the top with the remaining cake slices. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze at least 6 hours or up to 3 days. Let the cake stand at room temperature 10 minutes before unmolding. (Longer is better in my opinion).

Ouch!

Up at 4:30 today so Leon could be at the hospital at 5:30 for his lumbar puncture. He has a shunt that drains the excess spinal fluid and he feels sure it has come loose or broken. Finally the day has come to get his spinal fluid level checked. Sure enough the shunt is broken so now he can schedule surgery to get it fixed. All went well. I had no idea the hospital had such good biscuits and gravy!

July 4

Saturday was a fun filled day which began with a few geocaching stops. There were two caches within 1 mile of my house that we had visited several times with no luck! While 2 Dog Knight, aka Don, is in town we thought we might solve the dilemna and indeed we did. I never knew what a "skirt lifter" was and had no idea that the base of the lamp post could be lifted. Had I visited the one shown I might have figured it out because the other spots had many other options. As soon as we did the first one we realized the other two were the same. Mystery solved! It helps that Don has 1700 geocaches under his belt.

The farmer's market had a good crowd and we were among them in search of some homegrown tomatoes. We scored again and treated ourselves. Now I can make my chilled dill tomato soup.

Kay, Mary and David joined us for a cookout to celebrate the red, white, and blue. We had a feast that included brats, pork tenderloin, corn on the cob, fresh tomatoes, potato salad, pea salad, Santa Fe salad, and mojitos. Then we were treated to Mary's homemade ice cream topped with frosted blueberries to accompany my strawberry cake! The day ended with a bang as Jeff put on a fireworks display atop the hill.

Gallery Walk

Again it is the first Friday of the month and time for gallery walk. We decided to eat German food first at Brau Haus in the hopes it would be a little cooler when we strolled the streets. There was a gentle breeze and a large crowd for Don's first gallery walk. Not a bad form of entertainment for our out of state guest! We were delighted that Kay joined us also.
I spotted the reflection of this building where I once worked for First Federal Savings as we were headed to the car. For some reason I was fascinated.

Summer delights

The daylillies sparkle at this time of the year. I like the new fancy ones but I am just as content with the old time orange glow! The hummingbirds are high in the Mimosa trees and not the least bit tempted by my feeder! Yesterday we harvested plenty of garlic. This morning I have been to the butterfly garden - no butterflies - just me!
It is time to celebrate the red, white and blue! We practiced last night with grilled chicken and vegies. Don has graced us with his presence for several days enroute to Houston. He is winding up his trip to Pennsylvania to visit family.
Leon got a new trailer hitch put on the 5th wheel yesterday so we can add a rack and take more toys when we travel but right now there are just too many projects at the dead end!
